Very informative and amazingly rich read on ancient Egypt
I have read countless books about the ancient world and civilizations including Egypt, Rome, Greece, Assyrian, Sumerian, Babylonian, phoenician, scandavian, Asian Indian and little chinese, so I have an idea on chosing good books on this subject. And I tell you this book is one of the most informative book and it is so complete that any reading in the subject will make it just a repitition! It contains a geart text, numerus clear pictures and drawings with awesome illustrations which allow you to imagine what was it to live in their time. It covers all the aspects, starting from the very begining prehistory, ealy, middle, late, Greco-Roman periods. Also covers almost all aspects of their life, Gods, cults, state society, houses, cities, Arts, lifestyle, Palaces, daily life Royal administration and its organization, military, political, mumification, burial and much much more. It contains a very valuable appendecies (Gods of ancient Egypt, list of historic sites, rulers of Egypt, Egypt collections, and chronological synopsis). I visited Egypt three times and I saw pictures in the book that I have never seen. What I like most is there are some drawings that reconstruct temples, palaces and monuments which provides a clearer image of site rather than just pictures of ruins. I enphusise again on the pictures included in addition to the easy to read text.

Most Fascinating and Educational Book on Egypt!
This book is full of fantastic pictures! Wonderful text to go along with the pictures and great detail... Great for reference... and Great for personal knowledge! One word.... AWESOME!

Egyptian Mythology A to Z: A Young Reader's Companion (The Mythology A to Z Series)

Egyptian Mythology A toZ, A Young Reader's Companion
I found Pat Remler's Egyptian Mythology A to Z to be one the easiest ways to learn almost everything there is to know about ancient Egyptian mythology, and then some. What I liked best was that the author not only concentrated on the Pantheon of Ancient Egyptian Gods and their mythological histories, but Remler also included in it's encyclopedia-like format such entries as Magical Colors seen in tomb paintings. I will never look at another Ancient Egyptian scene, whether in a tomb, museum or book without knowing a great deal more about the significance of what each specific color actually means. Everything is included here, from covering the alleged "Curse of Tutankhamen" to a descriptive analysis of the various Crowns worn by the Pharaohs. I found the book's short Introduction to be another amazement. In a matter of three or four pages the author covers a time span of some 700,000 years, from Egypt's pre-history, when very little was happening, to the sudden explosion of culture less than 5,000 years ago. There is an easy to follow timeline for Ancient Egypt and numerous line drawings of the gods and goddesses by Mary Jordan. The splendid photographs by the author made this book, for me, a real pleasure to read. It is a handy, alphabetically arranged reference book that will surely be of interest to anyone in pursuit of reliable knowledge of the subject. It's a book for everyone, from being "A Young Reader's Companion," as its subtitle suggests, to the scholar in need of refreshing his or her memory of Ancient Egypt's mythological vastness. All the mystery and magic is here, in this very well written book. I have long been an armchair Egyptologist myself, have been since I was twelve-years-old. How I wish I had come across such a book as this, over half a century ago.

Egyptian Mythology: MORE than a Young Reader's Companion
Pat Remler's Egyptian Mythology A to Z is a gem! More than an encyclopedic approach to a fascinating period, this little jewel brings to life the ancient voice by presenting excerpts from sacred texts and literature. "We set off for the mines of the pharaohs..." begins the famous Myth of the Shipwrecked Sailor. "Give praise to Ptah, lord of Maat..." prays an ancient who is identified by his own voice "I am a man who swore falsely....and he (Ptah) made me see darkness by day..... beware ...refrain from uttering Ptah's name falsely..." The text, articulate and informative, is accompanied with lovely line drawings by the author's sister, Mary Jordan, as well as interesting photographs of Egyptian temples and artifacts. The entries are rich and far from general, offering often less known facts on this exciting period. Offerings on the Book of Gates,on the Amduat, the book of that which is in the underworld, go beyond brief identification. Each presents an account of the perilous journey taken through these mythic realms, through the hours, and gates that take one beyond. The presence of an index, seldom present in books with this A-Z format, adds to the ease of cross reference. There are thus no less than 25 entries for the god Thoth, as well as some 35 for the goddess Hathor. A two page bibliography points the reader to scholarly works for a more in depth study as well as future investigation. Egyptian Mythology lacks for nothing save a title which would better identify its true nature. I suggest the following: Egyptian Mythology A to Z: More than a Young Reader's Companion.

The Egyptians (Peoples of Africa)
Published in Hardcover by Blackwell Publishers (January, 1997)
Author: Barbara Watterson
Average review score:

The Egyptians
An excellent book, well written by an excellent and knowledgeable author. a must for anyone having an interest in Ancient Egypt

An excellent history of Egypt
Watterson's book provides a fascinating, and very readable, introduction to the ancient land of Egypt. I couldn't put it down! And, our local library can't keep it on the shelves.

Watterson combines the best of the classical authors (Herodotus, Strabo, etc) with the best of current scholarship. She has a unique ability to focus on what is most important and interesting in the long span (5000 years!) of Egyptian history.

This book is very well written, very rich in information, and truly a pleasure to read. It is one of the very best histories that I have ever read. I believe that it will soon become a classic textbook, reference, and popular work. I recommend it without reservation to anyone - high school or college student, scholar, or general reader - who wants an excellent history of Egypt from ancient to modern times.

Great detail
Many details, not revealed or available from other sources, bring to life Elizabeth's Court. Great detail in the logistics need to move Elizabeth's court during progress are revealed. Places historical events into the everyday existance of the time. A must for the Elizabethan historian.

A vivid insight into the Elizabethan court on tour .
This book gives a deep insight into the protocols and systems required in the 16th century to maintain the monarchy in a position of strength while still governing a somewhat turbulent nation.Good research brings life to places, people and events. The wider political problems of Elizabeths reign rightly take second place to the general day to day requirements of a the Tudor nobility to sustain the rigours of court functions by laying heavy demands upon local landowners and their like.A book for those with both a deep and those with a more peripheral interest in Elizabethan history

Brownie Girl Scouts Love It
My Brownie Troop is using this book to prepare for "Thinking Day" - a day Girl Scouts learn about other countries and cultures. The book is full of activities that first graders love - mazes (Istanbul landmarks), color by number (a ceramic plate), hidden pictures (the Dolmabahce Palace), connect the dots (the Blue Mosque), etc. The girls will have a fun time learning about Turkey and it was soooo easy for me, their leader! My daughter can't wait for our "Turkey meeting"!

Finally, a wonderful introduction to Turkey for children.
I was thrilled when I discovered "Exploring Turkey". I think it is really important for children to learn about different places and cultures in the world. Filled with fun activities for children, it is a great introduction to a culture full of so many things. I have used the book as a learning tool during the holidays. Children love it.

Faith and Freedom: Women's Human Rights in the Muslim World (Gender, Culture, and Politics in the Middle East)
Published in Hardcover by Syracuse University Press (July, 1995)
Author: Mahnaz Afkhami
Average review score:

Insightful and Educational.......a real life tear jerker.
An excellant record of the link between faith, and religion and human rights. I would suggest that anyone interested in religious rights, women's rights, and the US foreign policy response to these issues, read this book.

Excellant Record of an Unnoticed Struggle!
This book provides a wonderful foundation for understanding the cultural norms which allow human rights violations to occur, and the foreign policy implications which allow them to be unnoticed. This book will make you want to change our policies. It enhanced my understanding of the struggles of Muslim women. A definate must read.
